Bechdel spreadsheet + medical beta needed + Mahershalalhashbaz Ali

Aug 30, 2010 13:11

Remember that post I made about whether or not "chick flicks" pass the reversed Bechdel test or not? I promised a spreadsheet, and a spreadsheet I have made. In ods or xls, whichever you prefer.

So far, it's mostly empty. I've put in all the films we talked about in that post, plus some picks of my own, plus the 50 best list I found. But since I haven't seen most of the film on the 50 best list, a lot of fields haven't been filled in. Any help with that would be greatly appreciated!

As for the stuff actually filled in, you can choose to sort the cells according to their replies concerning Bechdel/reversed Bechdel, and see where each film falls. So far, even though they're all so-called chick flicks and some of them were specifically chosen because they pass the Bechdel but not the reverse, there are still roughly the same number of films that have men talking to each other but not women, as those that have women talking to each other but not men. Yeah.

In a review of Predators in a Swedish magazine, the reviewer complained that "Mahershalalhashbaz Ali is the worst goddamned movie star name ever. 'Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, dinner's ready!'" I chuckled, because I thought much the same thing when I first saw him in The 4400.

Now, though, after the chuckle I paused and wondered, is it really? Because I remembered the guy. Seeing his name, years after last seeing him on TV (I never did catch up on the later seasons), made me wonder if perhaps I should see the movie after all. (I hadn't planned to.) Maybe, rather, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali is a little bit like Benedict Cumberbatch - a hell of a name to learn, but one you're definitely going to recognize the next time you see it.

Out of curiosity, I also asked Dad if the name was Arabic or something else. He went, "Well, 'Maher' means skilful, but I can't make any sense of the rest... is he American? The spelling seems like a Black Muslim name.'

Which, not a bad guess. Imdb was more informative, though: Isaiah, chapter 8, verse 3. The longest proper name in the Bible. :-)

Finally, I'm working on my Threshold fic (and realizing at the same time that if I'm to finish that eid_fic crossover I promised
jadelennox last year, I'd better write that too), and I realized that I need someone who has knowledge of medical treatments, or US hospital procedures, or preferably both. Any doctors, nurses, or patients among you who'd help answer a few questions, please?
