And this is why I get cross with people declaring that "the Christians" (or "the Mormons" or "black people") are anti-gay, because treating people like a great monolith of opinion is part of the problem, not an explanation. Some of the kindest, most open-minded people I've met were practicing Christians, as well as some of the cruellest and stupidest. A religion is made up of people, and people have their own minds, regardless of how easy it is to see them as a great scary wave.

Yeah. I think there's more variation within religions than between them, both in terms of theology and ethics. My dad likes to say that there are as many religions as there are people - possibly a few more religions.
