Meme: Fuck you, she's awesome!

Snagged from fabu and settiai, originally created by dsudis.

So I was adding some new interests to my LJ profile (because I, uh... have some new interests. Yes.) and found myself feeling defensive every time I typed a female name, thinking, basically, FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME, because I felt as if someone somewhere was going to be criticizing my love for them ( Read more... )

Oh Jane Eyre, one of my old favourite novel heroines! She had me from the moment she stood up to her aunt.

:-) She seems to polarize readers for some reason - people like us love and admire her, and then there are those who hate or dismiss her. (I hate to hear that she "submitted to patriarchy". The mere thought is so un-Jane Eyre.)

4: For some reason I have gotten really into BtVS at the mom (it's a new obsession for me, only had it for about a month or so but I seem to have it bad) and am collecting all the DVD's. Only problem is I feel sooo embarrased when buying a BtVS DVD or someone I know going: So you like Buffy? Really? And I'm like Yes you have a problem with that? But truth is I kind of still have a problem with that myself. But I agree Anya is great. She's just so refreshingly straight forward. Didn't like the last episode at all...

7: No disagrements there!

BtVS is one of those shows that I think is a definite proof that one is on the geeky side of the fence. But I'd already been a geek for ages by the time I started watching, so I didn't mind. :-)

*points to headline, whether it makes you giggle or not*

I'm perfectly willing to discuss the pros and cons of these characters at some other point, but this isn't a discussion meme, it's a "fuck you, she's awesome" meme. So right now, I'm not going to defend myself or them, I'll just maintain that they're awesome and most politely ask you to go fuck yourself. *g*

*giggles even more*

I didn't mean that you should. I generally don't think anyone should defend themselves for liking a character, I was simply pondering on something that has been a head scratcher for me for a while. I guess this was a convenient possibility! :)

In addition, just because I dislike them, doesn't mean they aren't awesome. It just means I dislike them.

In general, I think the gist of the meme is good, and I'm busily collecting relevant characters myself, I just wish we had a broader space to like and dislike female characters. But this is again moving away from the meme, so I'll shut it.

I think most of these characters have perfectly good reasons why people don't like them, which is probably a huge reason I do like them. I have a really hard time with over-lauded chars, so I tend (along with a lot of fandom) not to like love interests and main characters.

As for the less hyped but still firmly likeable characters, I didn't feel the need to put them there. I mean, I don't begrudge anyone their right to proclaim love for the Zoes and Marthas and Chloes in this world, but to me it felt like such a given. :-)

Ooh, Reinette! I liked her too, and pretty much for those exact reasons. She didn't let the Doctor define who she was.

Exactly - I guess that's an upside of using a historical character with a very active life (and love life). :-) Although I like to heap some praise onto the Moff as well, because he's three for three as far as good female DW guest stars go, so far.
