Meme: Fuck you, she's awesome!

Apr 09, 2008 22:13

Snagged from fabu and settiai, originally created by dsudis.

So I was adding some new interests to my LJ profile (because I, uh... have some new interests. Yes.) and found myself feeling defensive every time I typed a female name, thinking, basically, FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME, because I felt as if someone somewhere was going to be criticizing my love for them.

So, anyway, then I made a list of women who make me want to say FUCK YOU, SHE'S AWESOME. They are far from the only women who are awesome, or the only women people need to be told to step off of, but they are the top ten I feel that way about, right now, off the top of my head.

If you want to argue with me about the awesomeness of any of these women, I am afraid I will simply be referring you to the subject line. THAT IS ALL.

I had some problem with this meme, because most of the female characters I think are awesome don't get a hard time by other fans, and most female characters who get a hard time by other fans I don't think are awesome. Rebecca is better than Rowena and all that. :-)

At first I thought, should I add all the female characters I think are awesome, ranging from Lynda Day to Sarah Jane Smith to everyone in between? (It seemed like that was what the others were doing, judging by the names I found.)

I started writing them down. And by the time I reached fifty, I thought, you know what? I bet you can find ten names there that aren't widely acknowledged to be awesome.

So here's that list. Not the ten most awesome women, just the ten awesome women who need some more fan lovin'.

1. Angela Petrelli, because when cockroaches rule the world, she will rule the cockroaches.

2. Pella, because old girl's books are more true to my life than the "real life" YA books any day.

3. Anne Steele, because going from vampire worshipper and street kid to a woman strong enough to tell street kids what to do is a tale of even more joy to me than that of any Slayer.

4. Anya, because she set up a funhouse mirror of our world and still managed to be real and true and heartbreaking in some of the best scenes on BtVS.

5. Livia (TV version young and old), because whether she's an evil matriarch coldhearted bitch or a sweet-looking girl coldhearted bitch, there's no keeping her down.

6. Peggy Fowler, because she was smart and compassionate, and the existance of one kick-ass female character does not mean the other female character is not also kick-ass.

7. Jane Eyre, because she had integrity enough to know who she was, what she wanted, and what she didn't want - and there was no budging her.

8. Donna Noble, because someone needs to get the Doctor off his high horse, and thank God PiC seems to have changed many people's minds about her.

9. Bela Talbot, because she stole the Colt, screwed the boys over ten times from Sunday, makes me snicker with evil glee, and always comes down on her feet - sometimes with the help of the very boys she keeps screwing over. Suckers. :-)

10. Reinette Poisson, because she was everything the Doctor said she was, because she sassed the clockworkmen, and because even though she loved the Doctor and was left behind, she kept her sense of self-worth to the end.
