my thoughts on Jericho

Apr 02, 2008 20:54

Okay, since I'm already posting, here are the thoughts on Jericho I talked about. They turned out quite bitchy at times, but I did watch the whole show in a week, so it's safe to say I enjoyed it.

Cut for some spoilers, length, and possible squee-harshing for the diehard fans. )

Jake made it pretty far down my list of love, but considering that I often actively dislike main characters, especially the "run around to save the day" type of main characters, I thought he was worth his place for being likeable at all. I haven't seen 24, so for me it was more, "Hm, so this is what it would be like if Jack Shephard didn't suck!" (It may have been the tracheotomy that made me draw the comparison, even though the tracheotomy on Lost was never actually performed.)

...considering why I watched the show religiously, I've come to the conclusion that it is mostly due to the crushes I have on Alicia Coppola and Sprague Grayden.

Yeah, they're both really awesome and pretty. And I love AC's freckles.

Fun fact: not the first show I saw with Timothy Omundson, but definitely the first where I noticed him, which made Psych rather awkward at first.

I first saw him on Judging Amy, then on Psych, so I was more, "It's Timothy with a beard! Please do everything he says!" I suck at separating actor and character sometimes.

Hm. I don't think I see that, personality-wise (their role on the show is the same, obviously). Jack - Eric, yes, that would work for me. (Er, I should mention that I really, really despise Jack. There are other characters on Lost that I don't care much about, and I really prefer the B-cast to the Triangle of Doom, but Jack is the only one I might actually hate. Hasn't happened to me in a long time.)

And to be fair to Jake, he is a lot less "One Man Against Them All" than Jack Bauer, who is way past pathological in that respect - and supported by his narrative, which is a lot worse.

Yes - so cute!

Yeah, it's more role-wise. They're both the initially reluctant leaders who quickly take for granted that they are the leaders, to the point that they get pouty when anyone else tries to take charge. They both start out with handy practical solutions, saving people's lives. They both have Daddy Issues and no chemistry with their romantic partners. The difference, of course, being that Jack's personality sucks major ass.

I don't think Eric is much like Jack - he's way too much of a follower. Unless by "like Jack" you mean "whiny bitch".

And to be fair to Jake, he is a lot less "One Man Against Them All" than Jack Bauer, who is way past pathological in that respect - and supported by his narrative, which is a lot worse.

That sounds awful. Even Jake was a bit too "Rrrrarrr, GUN!" for me sometimes. But then, I've never understood the fascination in American Media for solving problems with firearms.

We agree on almost everything, which is kinda boring I guess... well, I didn't care for Jake all that much, given that he is in many ways Jack Bauer light, and I really don't care for Jack Bauer men (except when they are Sayid Jarrah, or as you rightly say, Robert Hawkins, who would both own Jack Bauer with their hands tied behind their backs. But I digress).

I'm really going to miss this show. Even more than Journeyman. Heather made me SO HAPPY. And I even got to like Emily by the end. And OMG MOM CAME BACK YAYS.

Heather was great. I'm so glad she wasn't dead for reals. And yeah, it was nice to see MamaGreen again, even if it was so briefly.

I never warmed to Emily. I didn't hate her the way they do on the motivator thread on TWoP (but those people hate Bela Talbot with the fire of a thousand suns, which is just wrong), but I never really saw the point of her.

I think they had intended the show to be this big love story about Jake and Emily, but dropped it after the pilot cos a) Heather had more chemistry with Jake, and they hadn't planned on that since she was originally not meant to be a regular and b) they got more interested int elling an ensemble story about how a small town woudl survive the apocalypse, than they did yet another lvoe triangle.

I was sad they completely dropped ehr dad and fiancee, tho, cos I liekd ehr in those storyliens. But compressing 20 episodes worth of plot into 7, most of the B plots had to go.

I tend to prefer ensemble stories to love triangles in general, so it all worked out for me. :-)
