Oh, I really like this. An very believable portrayal of what things might've been like for John in those early days. Your John was so convincing. Not fully gripped by his obsession yet, but the early signs were there (forgetting his kids at the library). Little Dean was adorable and heartbreaking. I also really liked your original characters, especially Melanie, who felt very strong and real to me.

Yeah, that was my intention with that scene, and I'm happy you picked up on it. In his defence, though, it's not such an uncommon occurrence. I based it on not one but two incidents in my family. My uncle forgot his baby son in the supermarket, and didn't realize he'd done so until his daughter timidly asked him if they shouldn't have the baby with them. And my own mom forgot me at Sunday school when I was six or so. The place was empty and locked, but I walked out through the garden door and went home when I realized everyone was gone, so I wasn't there when she came back for me. (Instant heart attack, I'm sure!)

Brilliant *sigh* A wonderful portrayal of John as well as Dean. I wanted to hug them all so close. Definitely difficult times you let come alive in this story, so damn close to how it could've happened.
I loved how Dean needed John to watch Sammy really carefully in order to play himself, it's just so heartbreaking and heartwarming and rings totally true. Poor boy had to grow up fast.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it, and especially pleased that you liked my Dean, since it turned out quite hard to write someone who half of the time doesn't answer or respond in the ordinary ways.
What a deeply satisfying story. I've been looking forward to this, and you don't disappoint. Your John POV feels canon, he loves the boys desperately, but he just gets sucked into the hunting. The first time he forgets them at the library was perfect - I felt his terror and guilt and panic. Oh John.
Your OCs were wonderful. Melanie was, of course, my favourite, with her hints of John hero-worship, and her steadfast determination to protect her family even when no one else would support her. I loved the scene where's she's reading to Sammy and Dean. *heart cracks open*
Your Dean broke me utterly. Quiet, but thinking, always listening. Taking in much more than John's aware of.
I like to think this might be how it happened. Great work. You weave a hell of a story.
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it, and yay that you've been looking forward to it! *beams*

Yes. That's the view I've always had of John - he's not trying to be a jerk, he just ends up one sometimes when he's not thinking.

*grin* Thanks! As I've said to another commenter, my mom forgot me once, and my uncle forgot my cousin, so these things do happen. I wanted to write the scene in a way that didn't make it obvious that he'd forgotten them until he remembered, so we're sort of with him all the way.
