shoot... forget people. I'll take the life of the average barn cat. Sit around all day in the hayloft - run free when you want to - get attention by everyone as they pass through. Sure, you don't get to sleep in a bed with a person, but it's not too tough a life.
"Not nice" would be people like the ones who called up our neighbours and said that the stray cat they had found belonged to them. They got the cat, and a month later they called back saying it wasn't their cat after all, and could our neighbours take it back? Our neighbours said probably not (they had a cat of their own then), but then called up the next day and said the granny would take it. "Oh, sorry," said the Not Nice people, "it seems to have run away."
I wouldn't want to be any kind of animal if I were to be at the mercy of people like that.
I agree with your sentiments, which is why I have a cat and not a dog. I mean, I like dogs--I was raised with a pack of pugs--but cats are like a friend who's good company. Dogs are like those friends who always call in a crisis and need your support. It's a burden providing, even if you care about them.
Yeah. I love dogs, but I'd always feel guilty if I had one. Spike I can meet after a week away (he lives with my parents) and I never know if he's going to be "You're *here*! Petmepetmepetme!" or "Oh. It's you. Whatever." He has his own life.

They have just enough smartness to be happy. I envy those little fur-balls.

To my defence, he was a skinny little thing in -97 when I got him, and TV was showing Press Gang reruns.
