I feel pretty good about today's Latin quiz, mainly as a result of walking back across campus with three of my classmates and discussing our answers. Since all of us had nearly identical answers on the main part of the quiz, I'm fairly confident that I got a high-C/low-B. This is good ( Read more... )

If I may interject... I work at that library. The journals that are being pulled are literally in pieces. We found several of them with pages either disintegrated or torn out. Yes, torn out! Most of them have been in Remote Storage 1, 2, or 3 or the library's subbasement for years and have not been requested in over 5 years. Think about how many times the remote storages and the subbasement have flooded.

In that light, I can understand that pulping them is the best option (because yeah, Remote Storage pretty much sucks balls). The problem always comes down to only having one side of the argument.

So, I withdraw my complaint but still hope that any journals that were even remotely salvageable were donated elsewhere or sold to people who would want to have them.

Yeah, having only one side of the story blows.

Anything that has been destroyed is duplicated at other major libraries in Florida. There are reasons we're destroying duplicates.
(1) We want the copy that is in the best condition, and ours clearly weren't those.
(2) All the major libraries in Florida are forming a consortium to have "Rapid ILL" and "Unmediated Borrowing". Basically, if we don't have a copy, these will get you one ASAP, in PDF in 24 hours or in print in 3 days.
(3) This consortium is building a joint storage facility that will house a lot of these materials for all the universities. Unfortunately, it will be hosted in Gainesville, but that's just because FCLA Is there.

Finally, we can't sell anything that's in poor condition and we're not finding a lot of those.

That makes me sick... I've rescued a lot of books from my school library after they've gone through them to 'weed out', the ones not used. The school has no place to donate them to, no one wants them. In my opinion our school library is pretty pathetic and should invest in more shelves, not trashing books.
