The Pipettes

The recent return of kitschy-quirky old-fashioned pop is making me quite happy. There's Mika, of course, there's stuff like Lily Allen (not a huge fan, but she goes in this category), but the latest thing I listened to that I really enjoyed was "We Are The Pipettes," by, well, The Pipettes. Hook-crazy songs that recall the girl groups of the 60s ( Read more... )

I have nothing to add except that I hate the Fratellis more than any other band that's ever existed.

Hahahah. Um. I didn't know how to feel about them at first, but dammit. The catchy songs. They got me. The guys themselves are sexist and dull with no appreciation for the place of homoeroticism in rock, or irony, but... dammit. Catchy!

He's the straight Marc Bolan. THE STRAIGHT MARC BOLAN.

Marc Bolan was pretty straight really, as far as most of his sexual interaction and romances were concerned. But he's the un-ironic and humorless Marc Bolan who happens to be obsessed with being macho, and that's so far worse.

The Fratellis. Hm. I passed by them briefly at Virgin Festival last year. It hurt me. Possibly on a soul level.

But these Pipettes - they intrigue!

Oh, in a vacuum, they're just as horribly heartless and cruel as the Fratellis. If the Fratellis (and the general sexist rock tradition) didn't exist, I'd probably be rather uncomfortable with their lyrics as well. But it's like they were made for each other!

But the beauty of it is that it's reactionary; for me, the appeal of women who sing/write about using men up and tossing them aside is not the actual idea of treating men like garbage, but rather the reversal involved. It makes me a bit giddy, in fact!

They seem quite cute, but can I say that the lyrics of Why Did You Stay (When I Treated You That Way) feature some of the worst, non-sensible, Babelfish worthy English I have ever read?

Example:
But there was never any doubt I always knew
That to me you said true

But my heart never could be so committed
So are my strange passions you permitted

Just: huh?

Are those the official lyrics? They didn't seem too confusing when sung...
