Because it was the only version of PotO that was available at Family Video, I rented "Il Fantasma dell'opera," directed by Dario Argento. Apparently he's some big-shot Italian horror movie maker, and this is regarded as his most dismal failure ever. And I can see why. BTW check out the 1990 TV movie version if you haven't seen it yet. It was the first Phantom I ever saw and I quite like it. Script is based on the Kopit & Yeston musical, though it doesn't have songs in it.

I've got that 1990 TV version on my Amazon wishlist, and when I get my next paycheck I'm thinking of spluring on a bunch of Phantomy goodness off there. ^_^ I saw the Yeston/Kopit musical at a dinner theater in Minnesota, and it was awesome. I have the soundtrack on cassette, but since I pretty much only listen to CDs these days I haven't heard it in ages. Going to have to dig out my Walkman one of these days. ;)

Yea, I've seen the musical stage play it was based on, so I know that version of the plot. That angle was different...not really cool but not really awful, IMO. *shrug* Other parts of it were great, though. I remember liking their Carlotta. Although Phillipe was just as annoying as Raoul. ;)
Did you ever see the old animated version? I saw it on cable once years ago. I think it was made in the 60's, but I may not be remembering that correctly. The animation was, well, 60's, though pretty good for the time. They had the Persian and everything. Though Christine looked like Teela from He-Man. XD
