Well, I can't say I really understand what the Architect was all about either. As a guess I would say that he was there to regulate the whole schmeal concerning "The One" and make sure he/she accomplishes what they're supposed to do (pick a few people out of the Matrix after Zion gets whiped out so they can all start over again
