The Olympics are a different sort of sporting event. It's not like being a sports fan or a fan of a specific sport because people who go to the Olympics are rarely fans of a single sport. If you want to see baseball, you don't bother going to the Olympics; you go to a baseball game in the league in your home country

I like the Olympics, but the medal races bug the heck out of me. Competition is good, but enough is enough.
colorwhirl makes some good points. It is a lot about obscure sports and really recognizing some amazing individuals. But also it's about bonding together in national pride, but not being limited by that national pride and also bonding with other nations through love of the game. Or that's the ideal, I guess

The Chinese people responded to show their enthusiasm; they were strategically seated in the grandstands, given certain countries' flags to wave, and "conducted" for when to applaud. Interesting.
You know, I find that both funny, amazing, and really polite. China is trying to make sure everyone is welcome at their games, which is very nice of them. I like it.
It does serve to distract from the social issues surrounding the games, but I spend a whole lot of of my time discussing China's social and environmental issues so I have decided that I deserve a break for a bit to think about the frivol that is the Olympics.
