I don't know if I should feel guilty that I don't care about the Olympics, or if I should feel bad for the Olympics because my apathy for the games is common ( Read more... )

The Olympics are a different sort of sporting event. It's not like being a sports fan or a fan of a specific sport because people who go to the Olympics are rarely fans of a single sport. If you want to see baseball, you don't bother going to the Olympics; you go to a baseball game in the league in your home country.

The Olympics is about more obscure sports that rarely get publicity, rarely see the light of day, and have amazing competitors bringing an international level of skill to a large group of people.

I've been to the Olympics before (and my mother has been twice), and it's not just about cheering for your country or hoping for your country to bring home medals. In fact, that last time I went, I saw two events and no US teams. My brothers went to an event I didn't go to, and there were no US competitors that particular day. (Three of us went to table tennis, and three went to greco-roman wrestling. Then the whole family went to a women's field hockey game.) It's about supporting sport and competition on an international level.

If Cory and I go, I know I'm going to try and buy some scalped tickets to an event where the Philippines have a representation once we know where the brackets fall just to support the notion of bringing sport to an international level. (Brackets are set after the ticket sales are over which means I can't choose. It sorta sucks.)

This is probably not well articulated, but it's not just about sport. It's a celebration of the world, and I suppose that's hard to understand unless you've actually been there. But at the games, on the ground, that's really what it's about. I love it.
