And wow, it's been a long time since I've read Genesis! I'd forgotten all about that story. Now that you mention it, however, I do remember reading it in these Bible comic book things they gave out at Sunday School when I was a kid and being very, very confused. And they wonder why so many kids are scarred by their religious upbringings...

Yeah, I read the Bible during sermons when I was a kid, which means I read the bits of the Old Testament that don't come up in lefty-crunchy Methodist Sunday School. "OMG God told them to do WHAT? That's not nice at ALL!"

Oh, it definitely makes me feel better. One thing that I like about the God of the Old Testament is that he doesn't expect humanity to just lie down and take it without talking back.

I grew up Protestant, so we didn't even get Judith. I do have fond memories of Jael and her tent stake, though.
