What I'm Reading Wednesday

I'm managing to do this on the right day. It helps to actually be at home and not be either in Lincolnshire or, as last week, spending a wonderful day at the races. It would have been a terrific day out anyway but it was made even more terrific when one of the horses I was betting on came in at 16 to 1. I'd only put the minimum stake on but it was ( Read more... )

Awesome you made some profit at the races! That's really cool you picked the right horse.

I didn't just pick one right hores, I picked two! My mum gave me some money to choose a horse to bet on for her and that won its race too. Those were her winnings though, not mine.

I've only been to the races a couple of times before and never really won anything so I was very chuffed even though it wasn't much money :)

That's even more awesome!

I would have been excited too, just to pick two winners! That's probably pretty rare.

Oh, thanks for the review of Handbagged! And I sympathize with the problems of Choosing the Next Book. :)

I've picked up and put down about five books so far! I just can't decide what I'm in the mood for.

Handbagged was great fun. They had two actresses playing both the Queen and Mrs T so their older selves could comment on the actions of the younger ones. The playwright used this device to get round the fact that a lot of the "facts" about their relationship are derived from rumour and gossip with much use of the phrase "I never said that!" The two male actors played all the other parts including, memorably, Nancy Reagan

I couldn't get past the first book in ASoIaF. I think it was the silly names. I can cope with them on telly, but on the page they just had me rolling my eyes.

Don't read A Dance With Dragons then. He goes berserk with all the names. I'm used to reading fantasy so normally names don't bother me but he went into overdrive with this one. Your eyes would get a lot of exercise :)

I enjoyed Bring up the Bodies. Some excellent story telling in it.

I *loved* Wolf Hall, but I need to be in the right mood to plunge into the Tudor Court and I'm not sure I am at the moment. If it's not my next book though Bring Up the Bodies will be the one after that.
