The Romans were wimps

Back from Lincolnshire (actually we were back on Sunday but yesterday was rather busy). Had a good weekend where we achieved absolutely nothing in the way of house clearance, but did enjoy ourselves. On Friday we went out and had an excellent Indian meal and on Saturday night we took the next-door-neighbours out for a lovely Chinese. I dread to ( Read more... )

Sounds like you had a lovely time, and I really want to go to Lincoln now. :)

(The icon isn't topical at all, I know, but I just uploaded it, and it makes me smile.)

Lincoln is a very attractive town (if steep in places) and the Cathedral is a gem.

Love the icon *g*.

It was a very nice weekend. Even the weather was kind to us.

Many hugs back :)

It turns out the Roman empire was felled because the soldiers got weighed down by all that new technology! Instant mirror messaging, smoke signal blogging ...

LOL! Yup, that was obviously the reason. The barbarians crept up on them because they were too busy tweeting by carrier pigeon.

In defense of the Romans, the pigeons make an awfully lot of noise while being tweeted on ...

Lincoln is one of my favourite places - the Cathedral is amazing, the way the light falls through the stained glass and colours the floor. They have a lovely choir, too.

My husband's a roman re-enactor, and we've done a couple of shows at the Castle, which was awesome - the group camped there over the weekend so they give us the keys to that huge door at night. Playing in a castle for real as grown ups is just too much fun. :D

Oh, that sounds fabulous. The last time I was in the Castle was last year when the Christmas Fair was on. It was almost impossible to move.

I hope I haven't maligned the Roman Army by saying my handbag was heavier than their kit *g*.

It was doing that on Saturday. The whole place was wreathed in light, but unfortunately it was just too bright for my camera so I couldn't take a photo that did it justice.

My husband comes from Boston and used to be in the Boston Stump church choir. The first time he went to Lincoln was to sing there, which he's done several times since, but he's never forgotten the first time as he got lost in the Cathedral. Apparently to a small boy it's very huge and scary!

No, the roman army are quite proud of not having much to carry (although the shields and mail armour weigh a ton...) Did you know the romans had folding frying pans? V. practical travellers. Guess you have to be, with all the invading and whatnot. *g*

I can imagine it would be scary for a small person. :D

I can believe that. I would not have wanted to wear the replica helmet I tried on for longer than a couple of minutes.

No, I didn't. That's fascinating. As someone with a frying pan that takes both hands to lift I'm quite envious of Roman travellers!

Sounds like you had a lovely time. I'll have to put Lincoln on my list next time I'm in the area.

It's definitely worth a visit. The Cathedral alone is wonderful but there are plenty of other interesting things about Lincoln. It's just as historic as York but less well known so there are fewer tourists, though on Saturday it was heaving with local shoppers!
