Almost finished packing! Yes, it is almost five in the morning and I am wide awake on a very odd mixture of root beer, wasabi peas, and Blue Nun riesling wine (I haven't touched it since midnight, I'm not that big of a loser). My stomach will never forgive me, but then again, I am a college student ( Read more... )

Gah, that reminds me of when I flew to Greece, Egypt, and Israel when I was 16. I suggest "The Great Gatsby," "Flowers for Algernon" and a childish but favourite nonetheless "The Rats of NIMH".

I highly recommend anything by David Sedaris, he's unbelievably funny.
Aside from that, Chuck Palahniuk's books are excellent, as long as you don't have a weak stomach =)

I know what you mean about the lights. I hate flourescent lighting and always have a zillion lamps in my dorm room so I don't have to use the icky ceiling lights.

Okay, book recommendations (because I know how those 12 hour flights go, and I've collected some rather obscure airport books over the years):

Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross - I've been recommending this one a lot lately, because it's really good. I'd call it historical fiction.

Ballad of the Whiskey Robber by Julian Rubinstein - hmm. biographical fiction, maybe? lol. It's about the Whiskey Robber in Budapest. Also awesome ( ... )

OMG I have definitely read Evanovich's Plum series. It's a guilty pleasure, since I don't usually read romance novels, but that series is definitely special. It always makes me crave donuts :D. My mom got me hooked on them. I'll look at the other two, particularly the Pope Joan one. Thank you!

I just finished "The Kite Runner" and "Reading Lolita in Tehran" and those were amazing. I agree with everyone else who said David Sedaris, he is hysterical. (And he's from North Carolina so that gets bonus points.) I keep picking up this book at the bookstore called the "History of Love" by Nicol(a) Kraus, I think I'm going to buy it next time, and it looks really good. I was supposed to read "All the King's Men" for my journalism class, didn't quite get through it, but it is really good and hard to put down, I plan on finishing it sometime soon. That's all I have for now. I have a huge stack of books sitting in my house in CH (and back home) that I am so excited I get to read now. Free time!

Pretty much anything Lucy Maud Montgomery (especially the Anne and Emily novels) and "A History of Reading" is shaping out to be pretty good too (it is exactly what it sounds like ^^). Maupassant writes some delightfully creepy short stories. Looking for "Le Horla" (it is in translation, I promise) is a probably a good bet.
