Hooray fox! Also, maybe I don't hang around with enough mountaineers, but... who has frostbite and doesn't go "oh shit, time to head to somewhere that I can address that"? Also, splashing it with hot tea... uh.

I hate it when people won't eat or warm when they're acting like that, though. A lot of the time, I've had that happen during the descent, and people get really stubborn about it. If it's blood sugar, I'll sometimes try "okay, I need to stop and eat, want some tea and half my protein bar, sorry I'm slowing you down". If they have to stop for me, sometimes I can get them to eat that way. But unfortunately, a lot of people are too macho/stubborn/what have you to actually take good care of themselves.

No, this guy wasn't a mountaineer, he was a hot dog. (He also happens to be one of the few people who has me beat on hobbies: polo, scuba, skydiving, etc.)

I would never do the tea thing, but it seemed to work for him, as it was pink rather than white all the way down the mountain. I assume his thinking was to apply warm water and dry it completely. Still sounds sketchy to me though.

On the mountain, I was racking my brains on how to get him to do this stuff without authority but you're absolutely right of course. It worked to get him to come down (instead of continuing into the 60mph winds above Lionshead), so I don't know why I didn't use it to get him to eat/wear clothes.
