Someone in my shire recently posted the above question to the shire's listserv. In no particular order, here are my picks

For me, #1 would be, "The Known World Handbook".

For fighters "English Martial Arts" by Terry Brown.

I completely agree on the Living History-Guliver Book series, you can't go wrong with any of them. I also love the "Life in a" series you mentioned.

Heck, I completely agree with any books you suggest ; )
