I've already decided that I'm going to email them maybe on Thursday and ask if it's still there. (I'll have the CMOS16 one way or another by then, and SpellingCity will be almost done.) I'll say I can't do it by the 28th, but if the deadline gets extended, I'd do it if it's still there.

that is a helluva lot to get a book edited, is it because they want it so fast or it's so big and do they think they can actually recoup this? (are these self publishing works or via publishing houses)

They are paying by the word, and this is quite a bit longer book than I usually edit for them. Which is another reason why I wasn't asking for the assignment, because the allotted time before the deadline wasn't any longer than usual. I usually manage to just get my books in by the deadline, since I have to do other more immediately-paying work at the same time. So I just couldn't manage this one, while I've got another immediate deadline this week
