He didn’t have to agree or like any of this - but for the sake of the operation he had to keep his mouth shut. It wasn’t like he could blame Sam for what had happened, and he couldn’t exactly blame that girl without being a hypocrite. But as early stated, he didn’t have to be crazy over the whole ordeal either. He paced back and forth waiting for Sam to get back, trying rather hard not to think about what he was doing
“Dean, what are you so worried about?” Castiel had been watching struggling with himself for a good half-hour. Although he had other things to worry about - Dean was being rather adamant about being a distraction.
“I’m fine, don’t worry about it Cas.” He said, although his tone of voice led him to believe he was anything but. Castiel just shrugged and went back to his computer screen - making sure everything was in order. Dean, however, started pacing again and it really was an annoying state of affairs.
“If you’re gonna keep this up I’m gonna go back to telling you what is going on.” Dean opened his mouth to protest, but Cas cut him off and continued, “I know you explicitly told me not to, but this is getting rather ridiculous.”
“Don’t, he just gets worse when he knows the details.” A sarcastic sigh came from up the stairs - the woman came down and peered at the computer screen. “You know, I can’t blame her… she did choose the better one.” The comment came fully with a devil-may-care grin sent in Dean’s general direction.
“She wasn’t supposed to have a choice, Ruby, now back the fuck off.” He growled at her.
“Oh you’re just jealous and your pride got bruised because she didn’t instantly fall in love with you. I know it’s hard to hear … but you’re not as all-that as you would like to believe.” She responded flippantly.
As much as he hated to admit it, she was right. There were five of them on the team and he was supposed to be the one that got close to Madison Dinardo to ensure the smoothness of the operation, not Sam. They were thieves- and very good at what they did- but it was all riding on Sam’s ability to work on the field.
Before this Sam had only done technology and research. He was the best at what he did and could easily find loopholes in any type of security - or could just as easily find anything or one that needed locating. That was when things were handed over to Castiel. Cas worked wonders on hacking live systems and getting surveillance on anything that needed it. He could also trigger things like massive blackouts, which tended to come in handy. Sam came up with the plan, Castiel helped implement it.
The whole ordeal would be sunk without Dean and Ruby, though. Dean had joined the military young - and had went AWOL not long after that. He was a damn good soldier, but figured if he was going to put his life on the line it might as well have some money in it. That was when John had approached him - and he had refused. The second time around he got the privilege of meeting the team. He had almost left due to Ruby’s reaction to him being picked- but had stayed because of Sam.
No one knew much about Ruby, except she was a cut-throat bitch that didn’t have to worry too much about not getting what she wanted, as long as someone of the opposite sex had it. That and she didn’t like Dean - mostly for grabbing the attention of the one person she wanted. Or for being John’s favorite.
John was their fearless leader who found all the scored and gave the information to Sam to start researching. He had contacts that never seemed to quite end - and he was completely smart on how to do things the old way. He needed Cas to tangle out all that newfangled technology for him. He hand-picked all of them, and even taught Dean everything he knew about the business. In many ways Dean revered him like a father since his own died on military duty when he was four - it had just been him and his Mom from then on. He was making sure that she was being taken care of with the money, and dropping hints that he was fine. He would have loved to go in person, but being a wanted criminal wouldn’t allow that.
The F.B.I. didn’t have their names, not really, and they continually changed them. The only people they trusted with real names was the team- and even then last names had never been disclosed. Dean figured he would tell Sam his one day, but only if the other felt same disclosing his own. John had always said knowing last names was never good, they could slip during interrogation if caught. But Dean didn’t care, knowing someone fully and believing they wouldn’t give it away was the act of absolute trust. He trusted Sam enough with his heart; he would give him his name too.
Dean and Sam had been together for about two years now, much to Ruby’s dismay. She was infatuated with the boy and it was Dean that had won him over. It was, in fact, the main reason he was pissed off about this whole ordeal. Sam was out with Madison, Castiel was keeping tabs on the ‘date’ with his surveillance. Dean, at first, wanted to know what the younger was up to - but when Cas let the word ‘kiss’ [even though it was only on the cheek] slip, Dean swore off wanting to know. So he paced, much to Catiel’s annoyance. Ruby stayed downstairs, talking to Cas and in general annoying Dean with her presence.
“Ruby, get upstairs now!” Catiel said and turned to Dean, giving him nothing more than a stern stare. Dean trudged over to the couch, almost hitting into Ruby as she dashed for the stairs, and flipped on Discovery Channel [it was shark week]. Castiel quickly changed his monitors on the couple to a game of World of Warcraft.
Keys jingled in the lock and Sam came in with Madison, laughing at something she had said. Dean sank lower into the couch. “Hey guys, I’m back.” He called. Dean resisted the urge to inform Sam he had been gone two hours, thirteen minutes, and at least twenty-seven seconds by his count. But it would be weird for Madison to hear something that accurate coming out of her ‘boyfriend’ ‘s roommate.
The cover was created quickly when this whole stupid thing started. Sam had done his research, as always, and told Dean where he could most likely find Madison. It was a bar on the west side of town. While on the way, he noticed a car matching the description Sam had given him outside of another bar. Checking the plates he confirmed it was her. so he parked and went in. He found her at the bar, tapping her foot along to the live band that was playing that night.
He scooted up to her and gave her his patented charming smile, “Hi my name is Jensen, can I buy you a drink?” she giggled and agreed. They started to talk and flirt, but for some reason this girl just wasn’t falling into his hands quite as easily as he figured she would. That was when it happened.
“Beer.” Dean recognized the voice and turned, seeing Sam at the bar ordering a drink. Madison, unfortunately, turned her head too.
“What are you doing here, man?” he asked, rather confused, and Sam ’s eyes turned comically wide as he stared at him.
“I didn’t know you were going to be here… You told me you were gonna to the other club. Sam replied sheepishly, then he saw the way their target was staring at him.
“Friend of yours, Jensen?” she asked, licking her lips provocatively and Sam swallowed in nervousness.
“Uh… yeah.” He needed to come up with something fast, something she would believe. “This is my roommate, Jared. I don’t exactly make much, and neither does he, so it’s just him, me, and Collins. I wasn’t expecting you to be here, Jared.” He said, looking at Sam slightly annoyed.
Long story short, she was enthralled with this ‘Jared’ who talked about becoming a professional actor. She told him he would do awesome at it, and he humbly told her that although he wanted it to come true - he wasn’t sure he could take the fame. So Sam became the field agent and Dean had to act like he wasn’t pissed about this. Not only had he been bumped down in the operation, he had to take this girl putting her hands all over his lover.
When they got back to the apartment, Dean had exploded. “What the hell were you doing there, Sam?!” he growled.
“I was getting a drink! I could have sworn that she would have been at the other place so I figured there would be safe. I didn’t want to run into you guys. And Jared? Really? What’s up with that name?!” Sam asked exasperated, trying to figure all of this out.
“You’re going to have to field. I’ll call John.” Castiel said, suddenly appearing from a dark corner and leaving once again. The other two stopped. This led to the first date with Madison, and Dean’s annoyance and frustration levels being the highest they had been for years. He worked a high-stress job… but this was just getting idiotic.
“Hey Jensen!” Madison called, coming in like she owned the place, taking one of the chairs. “And Collins, how are you? Get to your level 80 yet?” she asked. When she had first come into the apartment, she had asked what all the high-tech computer crap was. That interesting conversation had staged Castiel’s cover.
“He’s a computer geek; needs to keep up with all those dark WoW updates.” Sam had said, his gaming persona came into play. When she had left again Cas was mad at what he had heard.
“Great Sam, now I need to pirate it off the internet and you now how much I hate doing that!” Castiel argued, furious that he had to do something that immoral.
“You need to take a good look at your choice of career if you’re going to fret about something like that, Cas.” Dean said, amused that doing the other highly illegal stuff didn’t bother him, but pirating things off the internet did.
“No, we at least leave the people we rob a million or so to live on for a while- we don’t leave them with nothing. People work hours on these games and it’s what sustains them! Pirating their work off the internet is stealing food off their plates. They aren’t millionaires as much as they would love to be and I have to rob them - or wore their children - of food due to your flippant comment about play a game!” Castiel gritted out, once again explaining is philosophy.
“Ummm… you could always just go to game stop and buy a copy of it, it’s not that hard.” Sam suggested, and Castiel got up and did just that.
“Nope, haven’t had time to play lately. This is the first bit of free time I’ve had in a while actually.” He said, smiling at her as he went through the motions of play his elf with the username ‘AngelOfTheLord’. They had always known Castiel was weird, but that just confirmed it.
“Aw, working you that hard at I.T.? Those corporate brats never did learn how to care of their own computer systems. You need to work for someone else, Collins; corporate America isn’t working too well for you. What about you, Jen, how is that job search coming?” She asked sweetly like she belonged here, Sam was standing by her side when he was supposed to be standing by him.
“Eh, I had a few interviews but no luck so far.” He didn’t look at her, just kept staring ahead at the T.V. screen, trying to ignore her as she clutched onto his Sammy.
“Aw, don’t rag on him Maddie, he’s trying to figure it out.” Sam said and Dean twitched at the endearing name he had used to address her. “It wasn’t his fault he got laid off. That’s happening more and more these days.”
“Must you tell her everything Jared?” Dean growled out and glared at the taller male. The keep appearances Dean had gotten a job, at Hollister of all places, and had promptly been fired mostly because he had been a distraction to the female employees and too many customers had told him he should be one of those male models. It didn’t help that he had sold some of the shirts for less than their $60 price tag.
“Ok I’ll lie off; Collins has been giving you a hard enough time as it is.” Sam interjected when he saw the distressed look in his eyes. Cas had teased him some when it had happened but it was Ruby that was insufferable.
“I would say so! Collins is the only stable one out of the lot of you! I mean working for the corporate I.T. department sucks- but he’s picking up the slack on rent I bet.” She turned to Castiel who was grinning. This was mainly because out of the ‘jobs’ Madison thought they had - he was the only one that didn’t actually do his. He just told her he was “on call” for any computer problems. She believed him and he had the freedom to do his real job. “I’m sorry about those moochers Collins. Jared got a callback for one of the bigger theaters so at least he should be able to pay you back some.” That was another thing; since ‘Jared’ wanted to act Madison made him audition to get serious about it.
“If it’s not a part in Tommy, I don’t think Jensen would go. As for myself- I wish you luck.” Castiel said, not looking up from his game. “But I don’t worry about the rent- I know in due time they’ll pay me back… plus interest.” Cas was grinning like a mad man, the glow from the computer screen making it all the more eerie.
“Tommy? Who would go see that?” she dramatically sighed. Dean was sure she didn’t know what it was and exactly how epic it was. “No- he’s auditioning for the part of Prince Charming in Cinderella!” she squealed before going on a mile a minute about his audition and how everyone thought he would be perfect.
“Prince Charming?” Dean raised an eyebrow at Sam, grinning lightly in mirth. He was actually kind of glad he wasn’t the one that had to put up with this chick. Then again he might have considered it over watching her be all over his man.
“Hey, in the acting industry you go with what you get.” Sam said, shrugging lightly. There was a flush to his cheeks and Dean could tell he was hoping there was someone more suited for the job.
Madison stayed until she was finally bored of their company. She kissed Sam [which Dean didn’t see because he was adamantly watching some guy retell the story of his arm being chomped off by a Great White], said goodbye to the others before leaving.
When she left is when the real work started.
