ekaanta Chapter One Once Madison was out of sight Dean flipped off the T.V. and groaned. “Thank God, I thought she would never leave! Damn that girl is grade A annoying.” Coming from her biding Ruby stared at him like he was the least intelligent life form she had ever encountered. “What?” he asked defensively, “Sam isn’t the only one that can use lame phrases.” That got him a pout from Sam plus an eye roll from Ruby.
“We have to go over the plan and exactly what information was divulged on this outing.” Castiel said, rebooting all of his surveillance programs and bringingt up a few other things as well. “Alright Sam, anything of any importance? We might be your eyes but you have to be the ears.”
“Her father is having a party in a couple weeks and she was complaining about having nothing to wear. I asked about him but all I got was that he was rather rich and ‘the best for supporting her’.” Castiel nodded and typed a few things down. “Before you even ask, I haven’t been invited yet - but I’ll ask her about it on our next date.”
“Good, at least I didn’t have to drill it through your thick skull.” He checked the open windows, nodding to himself. “I made sure, again, that everything for you will check out. Jared Padalecki would come up even if your prints were run. They should, considering the other you doesn’t exist anymore.”
It had always been a weird thought that who he had been was erased from any government database - or even the domestic ones from where he used to live. The speeding ticket he had gotten when he was seventeen was gone now, while at the time he felt like it was the biggest deal in the world. Dean, Ruby, even Castiel himself, were only documents that they snuck into databases and then deleted again at their pleasure [and Cas’ hacking skills].
“Ok, good to hear. I’m sure he had looked me up by now- or at least he will the moment he meets me.” Sam sighed and moved so he was sitting in Dean’s lap. They kissed languidly, an apology for Madison and being with someone else even though it was for the good of the mission.
Ruby glared at the boys as they made up before pointedly ignoring their existence and talked to Cas. “You finish off my own alias?” she asked him, looking over at the information with satisfaction. “Pearl Mathews - sounds good to me.”
“You just have to be different, don’t you Ruby?” Dean groused when he finally parted his lips from Sam’s. Sam snuggled into his lover- resting his head on the other‘s shoulder gently.
“Oh like the name Jensen is any better! Plus I’m supposed to be rich, thanks very much. Names like ‘Pearl’ are common in higher circles - but I guess you wouldn’t know anything about that.” She was always more hostile when the two of them were openly showing affection - they had grown to expect it over the past while. Sam kept his own thoughts on the names to himself, if only to be spared being ripped apart by the crossfire. Plus, Dean would have been far too smug if he mentioned ‘Pearl’ was the name of a demon child in one of those American Classics he had to read while he was back at Stanford.
The college was actually where John had first picked him up. He had been a straight-A full-ride pre-law with the perfect life almost tied up with a bow. That was, however, until his girlfriend cheated on him with one of the richest guys on campus. Everyone knew he had bought his way into the university and he had then proceeded to buy enough gold to win Jessica over, too.
It was midnight, the day before his review to get into the real law program. Jess had told him it was over, a bracelet of real diamonds slung on her wrist. He didn’t cry- in fact he didn’t feel much of anything. He just felt blank and so he went for a walk around the campus. It was tranquil, mostly due to the fact that anyone that was anyone had gone to the party the rich bastard was holding.
He found a bench and just collapsed onto it, thinking of the life he had worked so hard for, how fast it crumbled. He hadn’t come from a rich family and it seemed like the poorer you were the more screwed over you got. That was one of the reasons he wanted to be a lawyer - lawyers got paid a pretty penny for arguing with other well paid men.
He was good at the details; committing many of the seemingly insignificant details to memory and bringing them back out to baffle the jury with. The cases were staged; nothing more than elaborate plays, but by now many were scared to go up against him because he played well on both defense and prosecution.
“I’m sorry Sam, we’re just not a good match. You’ll have your school for law and I just feel like I’ll be second on your list of importance.” - she had told him. He knew it was just an excuse. She should have taken that fucking bracelet off first if she wanted him to believe her. Then again she most likely didn’t care. The words were there for her own sake - trying to justify breaking his heart. “I do hope you understand.” And as much as he wished he didn’t- he did.
“Goodbye Jessica.” He said and turned around- not wanting to look at her or those diamonds. He knew they were the real thing, only the real things shone like that. His mother had one diamond on her wedding ring and it was her prized possession. She said that the real thing caught the light in a certain way, not like the synthetic ones you got for much cheaper.
So here he was on the bench falling apart. He thought about his Mom’s ring, how poor he had grown up, and the girl with the smile painted on her lips that were a mockery of the Jessica he had fallen for a few years earlier.
“You Sam?” a gruff voice asked. Sam looked up, seeing a man in extremely casual clothing coming up and sat next to him on the bench. “Heard that you had a pretty keen eye for details from one of your professors and thought I’d come have a word with ya.”
They talked about Sam, where he was and where he was going. John convinced him that if he got to be rich, he could get Jessica back. He held onto that hope for a while, until he realized Jess wasn’t the one he wanted. Ruby wasn’t what he was looking for either despite how many times she threw herself at him while they were working together.
Then he met Dean and he fell hard. Dean was everything to him after that, much to the displeasure of Ruby. The only tricky part of dating Dean was never knowing if something would happen to him for whatever reason. The main concern of course, was people that were angry that they got robbed coming after them before the whole operation was finished.
He still remembered their first kiss.
It had been after the first heist Dean had been a part of. Sam was amazed at how smoothly Dean could come up cover stories and make them sound convincing to anyone that was close enough to hear it. ‘Hi, I’m Dan’ or ‘name’s Cassidy… yeah my parents were a weird bunch but at least they created someone as awesome as me’. Girls fell all over him and although he always had a nice word, he never really took interest.
Everything had gone according to plan, except some guy had tried to pay Ruby for her ‘services’ and had gotten beaten up for it. It had almost cost the guy his life, also almost cost them the money. Dean thought it was the most amusing thing in the world, being the one to suggested it to the guy in the first place. Not that Ruby ever found that out. He wasn’t fond of her, but that didn’t mean he was really that stupid either.
After it was all said and done Sam was sitting on the balcony of the hotel they were in looking at the view of the city it provided [in this case it was better to lay low instead of trying to get out of the city quickly]. Dean came out, staring out of the lights and smiling lightly to himself. That night Dean let down all the facades to share something with Sam that he hadn’t shared with anyone. It wasn’t just a memory, it was a piece of himself.
“You know, my Mom always wanted to see New York, but she never got the chance because she had to take care of me. She loved those old musicals and always promised herself she would get to Broadway one day and see one. She would sing from… oh what was it called… My Fair Lady, that was it. She never was good with the British accent though, so it sounded like the cast was replaced with a hick. I hope she finally got there, it would have made her smile to be on Broadway.” Dean said before looking over at Sam - who had been staring at him since he got there. “You ever went to Broadway, Sam?”
“Can’t say I have but it sounds nice. I wonder what the world would be like if we all just spontaneously broke out into songs to convey our deepest secrets.” Before he could continue Dean was right by his side, kissing him. It was gentle and sweet and it took Sam’s breath away. He didn’t know it then but that was the point when he fell for Dean. A tongue licked at his lips and he opened his mouth to the invasion. Dean explored his mouth like he wanted nothing more in the world than to be there, in that moment, not rushed into anything - just filling his senses with pure Sam.
When they broke apart Dean was smiling, “Let’s go to Broadway when this is all over. We’ll get front row tickets to My Fair Lady and my mother will be there singing along with her Texan voice.” There was sadness behind Dean’s eyes. Sam knew it was an impossible dream, but when you were in this life, dreams were the only things you had left.
“Alright, Sam you need to merit an invitation and go with her. You said her father is hosting it, so it will most likely be at his manor. This works in our favor because that’s where he holds his personal vaults. While you’re there you need to mingle, but also check for security and cameras. You need to get a few pictures to bring back, but don’t get caught. You also need to give me general vicinities on where the cameras are so I’ll now what I’m looking at when I get into their system.” Castiel commanded.
“I couldn’t get any specs on the manor and… and… I have to do all that and not get caught?” he asked looking more like the rookie he really was. He could research, but relied on Dean and Ruby to fill in the blanks when there was something he couldn’t get security stuff on. He knew what to look for, but actually using his own eyes to see it when it wasn’t on a photograph was a bit more difficult.
“Yes, we can’t be compromised now. When you bring back the specs and pictures and what-have-you then we can figure out a plan for the heist. Most importantly, you need to find where the vault is. It won’t be out in the open, as you well know, and it won’t exactly be guarded like crazy by regular guards - too much attention drawn to it. Are we clear?” Castiel asked, raising his brow at Sam as the other nodded nervously back. “Good, we understand each other. Someone needs to explain some of the finer points to you. I can’t because I don’t know them…”
“I can do it.” Ruby volunteered, leering at Sam like he was the last brownie on a dessert tray.
Dean glared at her and pulled his lover closer to him, a reflex to save his Sammy from the panther that seemed to want to strike. “Hell no, I’ll do it. I’m better at this shit than you are anyway. Plus he needs to learn a little bit of finesse at parties- and for some reason I don’t think the ‘show your cleavage’ line will really work for him.”
“You’re such a prude, Dean! What the fuck is wrong with you?! I won’t rape the poor boy.”
“Like hell you won’t! I’ll do it, at least I won’t be raping him considering he’ll be begging for it anyway.”
“FUCK THAT! I still say you brainwashed him. I’ll show him, just because I’m a girl doesn’t mean that I don’t know what to teach him.”
“Uh guys, do I get a say in this?” Sam interjected.
“NO!” Dean and Ruby said in unison and went back to their squabbling. Castiel groaned, returned to bringing up schematics on his computer. Sam was pouting in Dean’s lap making himself look like an oversized unhappy puppy. He just wanted these two to get along- and here they were fighting like kids. Scratch that- they were fighting like siblings. Siblings that had ages most likely in the vicinity of negative numbers.
“Come on, we need to focus here. We don’t have time to not pay attention!” Castiel growled out and the two immediately stopped. “Now that we have decided to stop acting like children, I suggest we worry over who is doing what and exactly how it’s getting that way. Agreed?” Dean and Ruby weren’t the most focused, but at least they were quiet as the team hashed out all the details.
