But yeah. that's pretty much how MMORPGs work, although there's no customization as much as you think there is. The endless powerup shit sucks. What you should be able to do is like in FFV. Power up one class until it's done, then do it to another, but there'd be enough clases that it'd take endless hours to crank them all up.
As it is, all MMORPGs are the same. there's one uber item that everyone uses, there's one uber build that everyone uses, and anybody else is screwed.
