What an amazing, fully filled life indeed. I know this only makes your family loss so much greater, but you must be so proud of him too.

I am now wondering if one of the reasons you have such a good marriage, of course together with a huge investment of time, energy and luck on the part of you and your wonderful hubby, is that you had such a fantastic role model.

Yes, I know, you cannot think of that now. Sorry. But being a great spouse was perhaps the quality that impressed me most, because it's supposedly common and it's so rare in fact.

My parents also had an amazing marriage, which was also sort of my inspiration, in that they had things they loved to do together, but also things that were completely separate, which they supported each other in. My father used to call himself a "Star Trek" widower, as mom would go gallivanting around to Star Trek and Sci-fi conventions, something he himself had no real interest in.

Hubby is massively supportive of my fannish craziness and he also has his ongoing spiritual quests and various musical interests, knitting etc.

It's hard to believe all the things he did in his lifetime. This is list is by no means comprehensive.

Sainthood guaranteed just for this:

Hiring manager during the 50s who got blacklisted people jobs.

I'm pretty sure he and my grandmother were actually black-listed themselves at some point. I don't know if he was ever a party member, but he was part of the New York, Jewish intelligentsia that certainly
would have approved the socialist ideals. It's something he was never super comfortable talking about. My guess is that he was among those were disillusioned by the Hitler/Stalin hookup in 1939.

I'm glad he lived long enough to see Barack Obama elected president, to see that some of the dreams of the progressives have come to be. My own father passed away in 2002, and it still bums we out that he died while George W. Bush was president without knowing that it would get better. Of course, my father was there to comfort me on election night 1988 when I was devastated that Bush the Elder had won. He was always there to tell me "this too shall pass."
