My students finished reading Night a few weeks ago. We watched Hotel Rwanda (many of them actually watched it last year in history). For the most part, they liked it - even students who don't like reading, or school, for that matter.

I prefer having students read books like Night so I can slip in lessons about social justice and social action:) The next book we will read this semester is Animal Farm. I wish we'd read it earlier in the year - I'm looking forward to it; I really could have used something to look forward to much earlier!

Hmmm Thanks for the idea. I was actually thinking of showing some of Hotel Rwanda to my class, but just certain parts. With friggin' flex days in the schedule, I'm pushing it to get it all in. The readings I'm planning on using will most likely come from We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed With Our Families and Machete Season. I was looking for ways to cover genocide in a way that is VERY different from the middle school-Anne Frank mess they spent gobs of time on. Seriously, less dioramas from popsicle sticks please! lol

Animal Farm is the first book of my yr2 rotation (I have the Pre-AP kids for 2 years, rotating my syllabus). I really enjoy it too. My regular 10 graders are starting Julius Caesar as soon as we finish the ELA TAKS.
