For some reason it's the word "marriage" that gets everyone riled up. Civil Unions seem to be o.k., but how do they differ? Is it only in name? Are there a separate set of laws that would govern them? Would they only be for same sex couples? Personally I was against 8. I'm concerned about the state of my marriage *happy and preggers*, than the state of other people. I was raised with tons of gay people. I used to be the one of two straight males on the west coast of a national company. None of this ever affected me in a negative way. Or shaped my concepts of relationships in a bad way. So I just don't get it. Then again it took 40 years for the concept of a black man to become president to even become possible.

Civil Unions do not give you the right to visit your partner in the hospital and gain power of attorney if they are incapacitated, no questions asked. You cannot file taxes jointly. You cannot sponsor an immigrant (a la Green Card).

So, yes, it is more than just a name.

That's what I thought. So here is another question. How are civil unions conducted? Do you get less or more protection in the divorce? Will straight people start getting civil unions to avoid divorce laws. If so wouldn't civil unions be more of a "threat" to traditional marriage than giving gay/lesbians the right to marriage?
