Take it out, toss it in a freezer safe ziplock bag, then into the freezer for a few hours.

You should get some life out of it, at least enough to copy your music to a new drive.

I haven't tried that yet-- maybe I'll take it apart this weekend and see if I can recover anything to the main drive-- there should be plenty of room.

Why would freezing it make the drive come back?

When there is a problem with spindle or armature control motor or bearings, freezing them basically shrinks the mechanical components just enough that they may operate as normal for a short time afterwards.

You should freeze it overnight if possible, and transfer the data as quickly as well.

Put the drive in a static bag first, as ziplock bags sometimes carry some juice in 'em.

That's hard. So hard.

It'd drive me nuts...

I'm actually not as pissed as I thought I would be.. All my important stuff got moved over to the new main drive when I upgraded, so the only files that were still on the late Maxtor were my music, random junk, and parts of an old installation of Windoze.

Plus, iTunes still has a list of all my songs. It can't find any of them, but I have a "shopping list" of stuff to recover. Legally, of course. ;)

Ah...I see that you found the source of the mysterious beeping.

I have good news for you. Your music is (as of a few months ago), backed up on my hard drive. You'd have to download whatever you got during the time I backed it up and now, but still...Merry Christmas...

I lost over 200gb of music to a Maxtor. They are the armpit slime of the hd industry. I'll never buy another as long as I breathe. I am incredibly sorry for your loss. Thankfully you have the shopping list. I had nothing with which to recover my losses.
