I was looking at Cornel West's presidential platform -- reportedly he's seeking the Green Party nomination -- and the only item I would disagree with is "ban nuclear weapons globally"First, I don't think any other current nuclear power would go along with this proposal. For example, think of all the "depleted uranium" ammunition, which is sold under such euphemistic names such as "armor-piercing ammunition" and other (bombs containing weaker nuclear material that are being dropped by planes exist too).
This topic is very suppressed in public discussions, but due to the US having used such crap during the Yugoslav War, in Iraq, Syria and a couple of other places and it leading to lasting contaminations with radiation and even more heavy metals, it's actually not a very small topic.
Even Western soldiers came back from the Balkans and Iraq with damages that could only be explained with exposure to raditation...

Hmm, I agree that we don't hear much about this topic in the US. Or about other toxic byproducts of our warmaking. As another example, I don't think I've seen a single article on the carbon footprint of the US military.
Some quick research into the carbon emissions issue showed me that the Kyoto Protocol explicitly exempted countries from counting their military emissions.
It's another aspect of how in the US our military expenditures and activities are entirely free - our budget deficit is larger than our entire military budget (meaning we don't actually pay a penny for our military), we have no military draft (all "volunteer"), there are no effective limits on the President acting as Commander-in-Chief and making war anywhere he chooses. No limits, no costs, no sacrifices. No accountability. So, of course, why would anybody care about depleted uranium.
