I'd never heard the term "detrans" until this morning

I've thought of myself as an ally of the transgender community since the 1980s, but I haven't studied transgender issues in depth much until more recently, now that we have this powerful conservative backlash happening all over the US.

This morning the NYT clued me in to the phenomenon of detransitioning, which includes people who transition back ( Read more... )

Hadn't heard it about it yet?
That makes me think like "Blind spot? Missed a current train?".
'Cause it's not like this word has gotten into circulation only very recently (like a fashion).

I think I have a pretty clear stance on detransitioners.

Those are those people which thought that they have a body problem that circulated around their biological sex as a core, but which were mistaken in that opinion.
Among them - people which believe all this overseas' rambling and shit about "gender" as "social sex role" all the time and buy into that shit of mistaking their social role for their psychical sex ( ... )

Thanks for helping to explain. Trans issues are definitely not something I've paid close attention to until recently. When I was considering a "nonbinary" identity, it felt very different from a transgender identity to me, and still does. I'm not sure that nonbinary and transgender are natural allies, except that we have the common enemy of rigid gender roles assigned at birth according to one's sex.

But as a casual observer of trans issues, I'll say one reason I haven't heard much about detransitioning as an American liberal --> is because there seems to be censorship of the issue by mainstream LGBT groups. Detrans people are a kind of embarassment, so let's sweep them under the rug, they don't match the general party line that: the reason there's nothing wrong with LGBT people is because we're born this way and have no agency with respect to choosing our sexuality or gender expression. I've never agreed with that party line, I think lots of people have lots of choice with respect to creating their sexuality and their gender ( ... )

Hm... Might be.
As I know about the issue not through classic liberal/"leftist" sources but through such which don't buy into the mumbo jumbo "being able to justify oneself when being an asshole" ideology called "feminism". Which keep observing studies that indicate that there are biological preconditions that form everyone, and that eventually have an influence upon why both sexes on average are as they are (in deeds and mentally).
- So, they don't cover and blindly propagate the classic myth "I can entirely create and design myself by my own will", which the social activists from overseas still continue to spread all over the planet relentlessly.

two things -

1. The Free Press on therapy becoming politicized. https://www.thefp.com/p/how-therapists-became-social-justice-warriors

"Conversion therapy typically refers to the now-discredited efforts to change gay people’s sexual orientation to straight. But in the context of gender distress, activists have intentionally reengineered that phrase to include any therapy that doesn’t immediately and completely affirm a young person’s desire to change genders. This means the therapist cannot explore possible sources of dysphoria such as traumatic childhoods, sexual abuse, and family homophobia. "

A branching topic, but the article on therapists firing their patients reminds me of my last therapist who simply didn't want to discuss my fear of death with me, he belittled it when I brought it up, and when it seemed that was the next topic I wanted/needed to explore he moved to end our appointments.

But therapists are people too, and they have their own blind spots. Sometimes the ideal of the therapeutic relationship gives us the feeling that the therapist is a god leading us toward our salvation. They're just people like we are, but people who are trained in various types of talk therapy.

It is difficult to understand what really motivates transgender people when I'm not one. I find myself in this weird attitudinal territory in which I feel I support transgender people in their decisions to present themselves as a particular gender, including (age-appropriate?) medical and surgical interventions, but I experience the online culture surrounding transgender people as highly authoritarian and intolerant of debate. There's ( ... )
