Most online carbon footprint calculators assume that your personal carbon footprint can be calculated based on (1) the fuels you burn inside your home for cooking and heating, (2) the fuels your electric utility burns to supply your home with watts, and (3) the fuels you burn for transportation outside your home ( Read more... )

"You can switch from natural gas cooking and heating to electric -- we're thinking about this."

Then I'll say already now - have fun with your bills doing that...'Cause there's nothing as ineffective as trying to produce heat via electricity. As heat in electric devices is rather a phenomenon that just develops while the machine works and that you simply cannot stop. But heat is not really good for electronics itself. It breaks them.
So you can't create really effective heating devices that work electronically because that would easily break them - and, at the same time, the amount of effort that you need to produce 1, 2 and 3 kW of electric power is pretty huge, compared to burning some few bits of black coal or natural gas. (Their burning releases large amounts of heat while needing not that much a lot of them materially.)

We haven't proceeded far along this path, haven't researched options and costs, but it is an item on the long-term agenda. Thanks for pointing out that we should consider the electricity cost.
