I don't fear AI, not the way most people do

I expect most of those who fear that AI will become sentient and take over the universe have never successfully programmed a computer to do much of anything.  If you've worked as a computer programmer, as I have, you know how buggy they are and how often you have to reboot them LOL ( Read more... )

Hm... The bugs in programming and the inexperience and lack of knowledge of humans to replicate their own way of fucntioning, but trying to do it even though, that's what would worry me indeed in this issue.

I think there's plenty of evidence already that AI is biased regarding race, sex, ethnicity, etc., the same way its programmers are. And that's not even accounting for bugs. The easiest way to demonstrate this is by using a music streaming service - if you start by playing music by a black woman, it keeps on playing music by black women. Start by playing music by a white man, it keeps on playing music by white men. The algorithm trains itself by observing the racist and sexist ways people choose their music, and replicates it whether you personally are racist or sexist in your music tastes or not.

Well, then - is the AI to blame or are peoples' tastes?
Also - I think you folks over the pond who call themselves "leftist" are way too much drown in this thing to care about if someone is white or black, if someone is male or female (or rides the rollercoaster to reject a categorization) or whatever the heck that you feel is "underrepresented".
You always leave behind the impression "I have to like this because the composer is part of an underrepreseted group". - And here I call "BULLSHIT!". Because it's utterly bullshit and even respectless if I like someone's stuff only because of a personal feature of them, even if the art or music that they do is crap.
I should like it because I like it and not because own personal ideals match with the artist's ones or what kind of person it is ( ... )

I wouldn't want to coerce people to change their tastes in music, style, food, friends, or romantic partners. But often these tastes are influenced by an underlying comfort with one race, ethnicity, class, religion, or gender, as opposed to discomfort with others. Sometimes trying something new can be eye opening. Sometimes examining "why" we like this but dislike that can also be eye opening ( ... )
