I was fascinated by the coup attempt in Turkey. Last night I kept scanning various sources on the Internet for more information until I fell asleep ( Read more... )

In 2013 apparently 7.9 million people protested peacefully and violently towards Erodgan. Where were these people? I was routing for the coup too but come on Turkey what do you want Erodgan or no?

Don't know if it's only an emotional reaction. Maybe also depends on how much your rational part of the mind is still involved. For example, I couldn't see joy over a coup where I think the wrong government falls.

Everything I have read about Erdogan was bad - so initially I was happy that someone might be challenging him... Still, democracy - even if it's effectively only democracy in name only, once he gets into power...

Very conflicted, and just sorry for the innocents getting hurt...

Yeah like above, I'm not sure why you're saying only your emotional side supported the coup. I thought it was bad to overthrow an elected leader - but reports are that he: eliminates opposition, entrenches power, and is threatening (now far more likely) to essentially declare himself supreme leader / rewrite the constitution to concentrate power in himself.

I don't know enough about Turkey to voice a strong opinion, but that's what I'm hearing including from Turkish friends.
