not sure i'd want to use "What are we really fighting about?" though. angry people are usually blinded by their emotions and questioning their rationality or suggesting that there may be bigger issues at stake may not play out very well.
I think it depends on the person. I can see this one working with me because I tend to bury what I'm feeling and tend to bring up superficial things which aren't really at the crux of the argument. Those of you who are good about being honest with yourselves don't understand it. I, who lie to myself all the time, do. I need extra prodding to tell the other person what I'm really angry about.
I know - not healthy, but I have all my issues neatly tucked away - way down in the bottom where they can't get out. It would be kinda messy if they escaped .. haha.

I try to diffuse things with "You're probably right" which is my version of "Let's agree to disagree". Unfortunately, I've told people that I do this so when I say it to THEM, they say in return, "Fuck you."
