I think a lot of people who are anti-immigrant (not all, but a lot) have a really bad "us vs them" mentality when it comes to our country and the rest of the world. And I think it's that thinking that has helped this country get into the bad shape and position that it's in, these days.

After sinking six months of work time into rewriting and updating an immigration law review course, it's just confirmed what I've thought for a long time -- what this country really needs is new, updated, more realistic immigration laws. Quite frankly, it's amazing that anyone gets into the country these days, they're such a mess... I'd love to see more lenient, inviting regulations in place.

I haven't studied them, but if our immigration laws are 1% as complicated as our tax laws I'd agree it's amazing anyone gets into the country legally.

The crazy overcomplication of American laws and regulations, even moreso under the Republicans, has been stunning to me as a government attorney. Our Congress critters are so busy raising money and campaigning that they don't read the laws they're voting for. And many government regulators are motivated to write complicated regulations so they can hop to the private sector and charge big bucks to explain the regulations they wrote while in government.
