It was obviously part of a sooper sekrit LexCorp plan to infuse vegetable produce with Kryptonite-induced superpowers. Then, at the next Kansas State Fair, Lex would lob a squash or something at Superman's head. Are you saying that's not a brilliant plan?! :P
