Shawnee Eat Local! Farmers' Expo a Smashing Success (despite Old Man Winter's best efforts)

Thanks to everyone who braved last Saturday's insane weather (gusty wind, lashing rain, heavy snow AND sleet?!) to attend the Shawnee Expo - it was a great success and such a joy to see so many enthusiastic faces filling the Shawnee Civic Center! It was plain to see that despite (or perhaps because of?) the stressful times we're enduring, lots of ( Read more... )

I had been looking forward to coming to Shawnee (having just moved to KC and having no clue where to fifnd farmer's markets, CSA I can subsribe to or a decent coop in these parts) -- but got called into work at last moment (as will happen when weather happens). Unfortunately I'm out of town for a wedding next weekend. Any chance there will be another such expo-- or any place where I can find out about such things? Perma-apartment living does not lend itself to growing anything myself (and I wouldn't know where to start) -- but I miss actual good local affordable produce. I'm sure its here! I jsut haven't been able to find it!

Great questions -- thanks for posting!

If you can't make it to next Saturday's Expo in Independence, you might consider looking into the workshops being hosted throughout the rest of this year by Badseed Market ( see details here ). Also, there's the biennial Urban Farms Tour in June, hosted by the KCCUA. The actual farms tour is on Sunday, 6/28, and there's a week of events relating to local food preceding the tour.

Some of the KCCSAC's farmers will be at the Independence Expo as well, and would be glad to chat with you and answer any questions you might have.

If you're looking for organic farmers' markets, check out the KC Food Circle's list of them here. Other, non-organic-focused farmers' markets can be found on Local Harvest's websiteI hope that helps; even if a person lives in an apartment and/or can't grow his/her own food, there is an ( ... )
