Given that Sprint and Verizon, for the most part share the exact same network (they both contract the vast majority out to tower operators), it's probably differences with the handset.
It is a d20 roll whenever you move into a new place as to whether the nearest tower is close to you, or on the outer-reaches. Asking a representative where your nearest towers are can help you leave your cellphone in the best place in the house. Concrete apartment walls play hell with all carriers.
But what Manuka said is the #1 thing I tell people - the handsets vary wildly in reception and signal gain. You can also try a soft-boot - take the battery out for a minute every few weeks to clear out stray HTTP errors. That's a new trick I heard of from a Sprint rep that has helped some friends.
ive found that it also has to do with model and brand of phone, my wife and I have the same service but my old nokia always got five bars where hers would only get 2 or 3 and my new moterola gets 3 or 4 where i used to get 5.
