It was coming back to him now, as clear as the day he'd seen it. He'd never been sure whether it was a dream or not. Things had seemed so surreal when Goku first arrived, with no one who could tell him what had truly happened. His dream had felt so real, but it had just been a dream, until this moment. He stared at Hakkai's bloody hand, his brow furrowing deeper.

"I remember.."

There was an attack from behind. He collapsed to the ground in a heap of pain, as though something had exploded inside him. Shots were fired into the night, loud and piercing. There were hands upon him. A warmth, a healing touch. He heard voices, tense with fear and panic. He's lost too much blood.

There's no other way.And in that moment, he had come face-to-face with his inner demon, when that uncontrollable surge of freedom and power coursed through him with a frenzy. He'd never seen himself like this before. His memories were never so lucid when he was in that state. There was no dream

Hakkai's eyes flew up to meet Goku's again with the touch, and he held the gaze this time, a small smile coming to his face.

"No, you didn't hurt anyone."

It was true enough, anyway. What damage had been done had probably been taken care of by Hazel, at this point. Though it bothered Hakkai not to know where Gojyo was, where Sanzo was.

"I was in the process of stopping you when I came here... but if you remember that, then you must have come here before me? Except this kid told me over that... thing..." He fumbled for the little device, held it up. "That you'd been here for a while. So I'm not sure how that works."

The goddess had said otherwise, but maybe she was mistaken. (Could a goddess be mistaken?) Or maybe she had meant another time, long ago. There were crimes he didn't remember, somewhere in his unknown past. She hadn't been very specific.

Goku exhaled, relieved. His fingers loosened and fell away from Hakkai's arm.

"A kid? You talked to Dre?" That was the only kid that Goku knew in this world. "He's cool, we hung out a few days ago."

He scratched his head, looking a bit puzzled.

"But how could you have just seen me? I've been here for weeks. I thought you guys would be worried about me."

"That's..."

Hakkai frowned, slid his fingers down to brush them between the dragon's wings again, trying to keep himself occupied. Now that the blood on him had been pointed out, it was bothering him, just a bit.

And the situation was bothering him a bit more.

"I guess so? I talked to a kid, and he said that you'd been adventuring together. But I did just see you, so I don't really understand how that could be the case. Could this be a trick? Have you seen anyone else you know here, or any signs that it could have been... created to trap you specifically?"

"I dunno," Goku said slowly, looking somewhat crestfallen. He had never thought about it like that before. Hakkai was smart and could analyze things that were beyond Goku's understanding. The boy trusted his judgment, and had wished for his help a few times since he arrived in Kannagara. He thought about what the goddess told him and wondered if maybe Hakkai was right.

"All I know is that the gods bring people here to learn something. Nobody knows what, exactly. And I haven't seen anyone I know, except you-"

Goku blinked, remembering something else someone told him, a long time ago.

"Oh! But this guy - I forget his name - he said he saw you here once. With Gojyo!"
