Hakkai wasn't at all surprised by the way Jeep popped up out of his lap and fluttered across the space between him and Goku to land on the boy's shoulder and nose at him. After all, the last they'd seen of Goku... well... things hadn't looked terribly good
( ... )
"Heeey...Jeep!" Goku laughed as the dragon nudged him on his cheek with his snout. "Good to see ya!" he said, giving that snout a friendly rub with his knuckles. Whatever the circumstances, the natural reaction to this reunion was elation, and it showed in his smile.
It faded somewhat as he turned toward Hakkai, who looked like a bloody mess. Goku had smelled the blood before he saw it, but it still took him aback to see it splattered all over him as though he'd just had a run-in with a meat grinder.
"Yeah I'm sure. What about you? What happened to you? Is that...your blood?"
Hakkai used his chi during most battles, so rarely was he close enough to get doused in a youkai's blood. Then again, Hakkai had been in his youkai form earlier, which might explain a lot.
Nevermind all the other questions Hakkai had. Goku wanted to know if he was all right, first.
"...gone where?" Goku wrinkled his brow, looking just as confused as Hakkai. Again, his hand went unconsciously to his brow, where his diadem wrapped around his head securely.
As his fingers traced the familiar contours of the crown, he fell into a brief silence, trying to make sense of Hakkai's words. His blood...Hakkai's blood. Limiters. A memory, like a dream within a dream. So lucid he could feel the pain dulling into a numb throb as the life drained out of him upon the pavement into a pool of his own blood. It was everywhere. Red so dark it was almost black.
He looked up at Hakkai suddenly, his eyes wide and golden.
Hakkai met Goku's eyes for a moment, and then dropped his own, held one bloody hand up in front of his face, his gaze locking onto it.
The dragon that had been happily perching on Goku abandoned him, made an odd little hop across the space between the two men, and then curled himself around his owner, almost protectively.
"I could save you," Hakkai said, softly, clenching and releasing a fist, watching the dried blood flake and shift. "You were too far gone, and I tried to heal you, but... it wasn't working. So we did the only thing we could think of."

And then the confusion hit even harder. Because Goku was fine. Not covered in blood. Not nearly dying. Not in his other form.
"Right before I came here, you were... I was... trying to get your diadem back on..."
He gave a soft little laugh, shook his head. "Have I finally gone round the bend, Goku?"
