Balthier places his hands on her shoulders and leans forward, tilting his head downward as he presses his lips to her own, refusing to hear the rest of her protest. (He will stand in front of her because he cannot have her destroy herself. They have survived this much without crumbling. He will not allow some video posted on the network stop their work when they have just barely begun.) Her lips are bittersweet with heavy, salty tears. They won't stop rolling down her cheeks and gods, he just wants them to stop.
He was not made to endure crying women.
(Somewhere in this, deep below the surface, this isn't just about him anymore. Kannagara, searching for the gods, none of it. It's about them. It's about their survival and their will to pull through. If this is purgatory, then death cannot be too far away. Balthier can't outrun death on his own, but neither can Valeria. She can hardly outrun her own past.
And Itachi.
