It's always better to keep your allies closer than your enemies. Flee and outrun your enemies, but always keep closer watch on your allies. (This is how Balthier justifies his actions now as he pretends to be investigating the temple area, as he leans in the shadows against the wooden pole of a temple gate, and as he listens for the fuming Turk, storming the entrance to a sacred shrine.) Her heavy footsteps cue her entrance; cue his action to roll to the side of the pole. He folds his arms at his chest as he crossed his feet, looking at her with suspicious eyes.

"And where do you think you're running off to at this time of night?"

The sun sets behind her, casting golden light onto his golden vest. Green eyes sparkle against a purple sky, the glint of them piercing Valeria's angry-red face, shadowed by her position in front of the sun.

He has known her for almost a month, now. It's strange how time passes here quickly, yet he feels as if he's been with her for three times that amount. Valeria is a professional woman, just as he is a professional man, and therefore each party holds their own secrets, but he can't help but feel the need to expose her secrets. It is as if she is a person brought in for interrogation, and he the interrogator! Curiosity takes a hold of his heart and like a good leading man, he follows it. (The table has been bleached from bloodbloodblood, but it is still there, underlying the surface. Oh how the game of pretend continues on! What might lie underneath the white walls?)

But this is not how a pirate conducts his business. (Or is it? He's lived the role of one for quite some time now, he should know how a pirate should behave in times such as these. Of course, he's just making things up as they go along, fitting them into a plan that was taken straight from the drawing board.) A pirate takes his loot and leaves the door open. Yet, the leading man covers his tracks by opening a window. (Despite all the aristocratic classes enforced upon by his father, Balthier was never good at holding charcoal between his fingers.) So he is confused. Confused on what action he should take next: to stop a raging woman or to let her destroy herself and possibly the rest of the world? Because there is a conflict between what a pirate would do and what a leading man would do. (And Balthier? There is no question of what Balthier would do?)

Yet, black text painted against a shadowed white wall, behind Valeria--chained to a chair by his curiosity--reads,

'Do you care if she's raging in the first place?'

And he cannot stop himself from staring.

The answer is yes, either way. But the reasons for giving any slight of thought upon the matter is entirely cast aside for another day--for another hour in which the sun is not setting behind her.
