"It is a big deal. You saved a lot of people. That's always something to be proud of." A wistful expression crosses Lelouch's face. "Sometimes I've wondered if it can be done, myself."

It's so frustrating. Thanks to this paper, Allen will eventually be turned on by the very people he sought to help. Maybe that's just what happens. Lelouch remembers Kallen telling him how he'd left the Black Knights. Or rather, how they'd cast him aside.

Maybe it's no use. People will never understand one another.

Allen looks a touch embarrassed for a moment, though still with a twitch of smile. It's just... it's a little weird to have someone point that out, Lelouch. He's used to being kicked while he's down and berated half the time because of who he often tries to save. It's weird to be praised.

The reactions of the Celestials are more what he's used to, really. It's okay. Everyone eventually comes around to see the truth, right?

And if not...

Well, he'll keep going regardless.

"'Can do?'" he echoes for a moment, a little confused but relieved for the shift. "You mean helping people?"

"Yes," Lelouch says, "I mean helping people. It's difficult to do sometimes, on a large scale. On a social scale, I mean. The people I've seen doing the most to help people are often the worst to be hurt trying to do it." Oh, Euphemia, Lelouch could live a thousand lives and never do enough in any of them to atone for what he's done to you. "It gets harder and harder for me to believe that positive change is possible - or at least, that I'm the one meant to bring it about."

But he is, and he does - apparently. In the strangest of all possible ways. Sometimes, Lelouch fervently wishes he had a normal life - but then, he'd known the stakes when he accepted C.C.'s contract. The power of the king will isolate you - a different life, a different existence, all of that, he had accepted it.

"Still," Lelouch says, glancing towards the ball of paper sitting in the street, "it's twice as difficult to help those who don't want your help."
