[Gau's only half awake himself, really, when he watches the dream. His usual waking up ritual, flipping through the night's dreams. It's strange how easily things become habit, how quickly.

His hair is still mussed with sleep, and his eyes are drooping a little, in the video.

There's a sort of sleepy smile on his lips. The emotions from the dream have him smiling, just a little, yes.]

... something about this seems familiar. I hope you get to see your... friend... again someday, Steve-san.

[Steve's smile is soft, bitter sweet.

Tony might be the person he misses the most, has missed the longest.

Since the War...]

Have you had a friend like that Gau? One that you were closest to beyond all others?

I hope I see Tony again soon, it's been a long time.

[Raikou can't seem to hold back a soft chuckle at Steve's question, all feigning of sleep tossed to the side in favor of the instant need to simply needle this man.

Lazily - indolently - he pushies up to rest on an elbow, pink hair sleep-mussed, a pale shoulder bare behind Gau's own.

His smile is sleepy and soft as he leans in enough to prop his chin on the slender shoulder before him.]

Good morning, Steve-san~

I guess you could say we've known how dear a partner can become. It's truly wonderous when you can create that special kind of bond...when you can really connect with him, yanno?

[Steve resists to urge to roll his eyes. This impudent, insolent little--

Steve's had just about enough of his snide comments and his snarky tone, which Steve picks up on behind that loaded comment.]

I'm sure I don't know what you're implying, young man.

[He doesn't comment on Raikou obvious state of undress-- it's indecent, but he doesn't want to embarrass Gau by reprimanding his "friend"]

[Amelia is pretty emotionally straightforward, but... shall we say she reads a lot of romance novels]

You and Mister Tony were partners?

[The word has so many meanings, after all. ]

Ah, I don't mean to snoop. I never know what to do when I see someone else's dream.

Tony and I? Yes, I suppose you could call us that.

We worked together on the Avengers team.

[Any other meaning to 'partners' is completely lost on Steve, any idea of romance far from his mind.]

You must miss him a lot.

[Well, Amelia's concept of partners are her friends Lina and Gourry, who seem to have passed through 'friends' to 'old married couple' without hitting anyplace in between.]

[Steve hadn't seen Tony in what felt like an eternity.

Before he'd been sent here, arrived here, whatever, he'd stood beside Tony in the aftermath of battle for the first time in years.

Tony, who had been his closest friend.
Tony, who had betrayed him like he thought no friend could.
Tony, who had made such irresponsible and deadly compromises.
Tony, who he'd never been happier to see, there in the ruins of Asgard, looking like his old self again in that vintage armor.

"A lot" was something of an understatement.]

Yes, I do. Very much.

[A sad smile]

But I'm sure I'll seem him again, once I leave this place.

[It amazes Sasori how deeply all this resonates with him; the emotions Steve feels...they're the same, aren't they? Even if Sasori can't articulate it, he understands, innately. He glances across the crackling flames of the campfire, at Deidara ( ... )

[Unlike Sasori, Deidara doesn't hide his brilliant grin, one that is more real than many of the ones before this. No, he stares right at the hitomi, grinning like a child, who was told he did his math right!

And math it has been, eight years of shifting and turning, shaving edges. Eight years from blinding hate of a displeased kid to something terrifying, which fills an ache within him, through death and rediscovery of something he doesn't quite have words for, friendship, partnership, that missing piece in his puzzle.

Ah, but it's such a simple thing.

He leans in, taps the hitomi with one bony fingertip and laughs warmly.]

You ain't such an idiot, after all, hmn.
