...Dying here is not dying [Yoite murmurs softly to start though its not bitter, instead pensive and quiet.] It lacks fulfillment.

[He then shrugs and looks a little bashful, he doesn't know this person so he shouldn't and won't really go further into his musings about death]

I hope you are happy for the second chance it gives. [A soft expression now]

[Renji just vaguely remembers this kid. He thinks he saw one of his dreams once, but he can't quite remember what it was. He does remember that the kid was close to Ukitake, though, so he offers the boy a light grin over the video.

It's...a little odd, he thinks, for a kid that young to be thinking of death as fulfillment, but he does understand. He knows from his years in the eleventh exactly how some of his comrades felt about dying in the midst of combat, against a truly superior foe, and though Renji has never pondered it too deeply (he's always been too busy looking ahead, fighting for the right to live), on some level he thinks he might want to go out that way too.]

You don't have to tell me. I ain't planning on dying for good any time soon.

[Yoite blinks a few times in a slight confusion at the answer. He hadn't meant that Renji should appreciate being alive again, but he really doesn't have the words to correct himself.]

...how did you die?

[...That's a little intrusive a question, but luckily Renji isn't the type to really care. In point of fact, Renji isn't entirely ashamed of the way he died. Sure, things could have gone much better, but he died protecting Rukia, and it was for that reason he'd been at peace with dying on the off chance that the gods didn't revive him.]

Hollow. Those fuckers with the big white masks and holes in their chests. One of 'em gutted me in the chest when I looked away for a second.

[This man... Renji, right? From the same world as Rukia... and Byakuya, too? Ukitake when he had been here...]

[But he had been reasonable to a degree, unlike some other asses Allen knows. And regardless... he'd died?

Another one. Another one and...

...He's forgetting how to react to death. How can you react to it when people don't really die, but it still hurts when they do? Because it matters - a death defined Allen. A death that's now been utterly undone by having Mana walking with the living again. But that's a good thing. It can't not be a good thing. But...

... why does he still feel so conflicted about people dying and yet not dying then?]

And maybe if he's generally the sort to gloss over the majority of posts Renji would make, this one he answers. With a smile, a strained one, but one of someone trying to ease back into thinking for the best despite some pretty horrible things.]

Welcome back.

I suppose it hasn't changed that much from what it was before. What do you last remember?

[...

This isn't possible. It isn't possible. Things like this just don't happen.

... do they?

The dream slips by and she barely notices it at first. Familiar noises pull her attention to the hitomi by her side and without thinking, she picks it up and is flooded with feelings that aren't hers. Feelings that are his, scenes she remembers from a different angle. She becomes so wrapped up in it that she stalls, stares, and doesn't think ( ... )

[When she picks it up again, it is with hesitation. Unsure, afraid. As if by speaking she might break the spell and he'll be gone again and it would be more than she could bear. But she picks it up and switches it to video. She wants to have a sharp reply ready, to tease or embarrass him. To scold him. But she has none of that. Only a shaking voice and big violet eyes, shiny with tears she didn't know she still had.]

R-Renji?

[And there she is. All the video and audio messages he's received so far, all the well-wishes and welcome-backs, none of them mean as much to him as this one. Rukia.

He's tired and just sitting up causes passing bouts of vertigo, but he can't help but smile for Rukia, and this smile is about twice as bright as all the others, because it's Rukia and he has to assure her that he's all right. He has to be all right, for her, because she'll be upset if he isn't, and he will do whatever he can to keep her from having cause to be upset again. Doing it once is hard enough, even though he knows he would have jumped in to protect her again and again, no matter how many times the scenario presents itself.]

Yeah, it's me. I'm here. You know I ain't one to break my promises, Rukia.

[Can she believe it, really? Can it really be possible? It goes against everything she knows and everything she has come to believe. And moreover, she doesn't deserve it. But her heart is thumping, her throat dry and her hands shake.]

But you died.

[She glances away for a moment and then returns her gaze suddenly. Jumpy. Uncertain. And her voice drops low.]

I was there.

[ Kakashi had known it was only going to be a matter of time before Renji was returned -- he'd told Rukia as much, even if she hadn't believed him at the time. Death is a thing that they seem to escape from every time -- even the most terrible of people somehow manage to survive, though Kakashi never did quite understand what was the point of that. What kind of lesson the gods were trying to instill.

His expression is rather unreadable as he flickers onto the screen. ]

Well, it's good to see you back.
