[All the screen shows at first is the sky; off-screen, all one can hear is heavy breathing, slowly becoming faster and faster, until it's borderline hyperventilation-]
ALLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN-!
[The scream is shrill, high-pitched, and still full of agonized fear. It's obvious the girl making the noise is terrified beyond belief. This isn't

Should he or any of his Noah brethren die in this damned place, they'd be reincarnated as is, rather than their genes being awakened in a new vessel.
Because in truth, he is rather fond of Road in her current form, thank-you-very-much.
So for now he doesn't wait to see where Tyki or that idiot Debitto wandered off to, no. For now, he simply opens a gate in the place where he recalls 'awakening' in this world strides purposefully towards the great tree, assuming she's near it. That does seem a common occurrence, after all.
As he nears the tree and hears the proof of her distress, he quickens his pace to reach her fastest. It takes a moment to find her within the massive roots, however, the moment he does, He is kneeling down to pull her close, despite his own human form as he spooks gently, soothingly.]Oh my dear...what ( ... )

[The girl is still huddled in a ball, knees clutched tightly to her chest with her hands, but as soon as Road hears his approach, she uncurls, launching herself at him with open arms and widened eyes. Her arms fling around his neck, and she's on the verge of tears, actual tears, because what she's just woken up from had to be a nightmare, but it couldn't have been a nightmare, but... but what else could it have been?
She turns dark, tear-filled eyes up at the Earl.]
What- What happened to me?

[With a sigh, he sighs and shifts to sit on one of the many roots with her held safely in his lap before he begins to rub slow, soothing circles on her back.
For that - that boy to have reduced his precious Road to this...this little girl who's very presence seems to have shrunken to something almost fragile.
There is no place in this gods-forsaken world that can hide you from his wrath.
He cants his head to the side and watches her with somber eyes as he states quietly.]
You died.
[A beat.]
You were killed by that Allen Walker, Road dear.

No, no- Nea.
[It's all she can say right then and there as the images of the fight and its wholly unfavorable climax return, and she clutches onto the Earl's coat, suddenly filled with ice-cold fear all over again.]
It was here I can't be here take me away please please please-
[Something tells her this isn't the place it happened, but she brushes that voice aside, argues that it must be, there was a tree, and here's a tree, and so this must be the place where he-
...where she...
In the back of her mind, it's somewhat astonishing for Road to realize how far down she's fallen after the romp into Allen's subconscious. It's a mistake she won't be making again anytime soon.]

Whatever he was expecting - perhaps a threat, a swearing of vengeance against him and everyone he cared about - it was not that. And he jumped. Actually jumped a little with his heart in his throat because that scream... Road was back. Back and screaming like... like that brief whisper, that-
A flicker, a blink of a memory, of his (no, not his) laughter and her screaming-
And eyes refocusing, holding his head as if it threatened to split open, he stared numbly at the now-unmoving screen. She was still screaming.
That hadn't been exorcising a Noah. That hadn't been fighting her as an Exorcist.
That had been pure terror wrecked upon another person.
Dizzy and sick all over again, he quickly pocketed the Hitomi because he couldn't bear to think that, what was there, her screaming, he'd done that because of the Fourteenth. With Mana appearing the next ( ... )

Well. Because he's going to protect his friends no matter what, but that's not enough of an answer. Part of it, but not all of it. Because they were important, but... maybe it's a little unpopular... but without the akuma but with the Noah, with the uncertainty... with the Earl appeared briefly and then vanished with everything else from that week like a phantom... With knowing this where he is now, for better or worse?
It's like being set adrift with a dark passenger of helmsman you'd rather throw overboard.
(If that time comes, please kill me.)
Despite the last days of going through the motions, the smiling until it is better, of not wanting to worry the others, not wanting to tell them what he did... What he'll still do. With even this, he'll step across that threshold and say "I'm home" ( ... )
