FF13: Anticipation Builds

Mar 03, 2010 14:00

I finally got around to officially preordering FF13 yesterday. The store may actually be having a midnight release party. Not sure if I will go; I'm not as young as I used to be and staying up all night playing is probably not a good idea. ;p

Do not read if you want to know nothing about FF13 beforehand. )

In a great coincidence, I pre-ordered yesterday as well. The $25 strategy guide is $15 on Amazon so I bundled that with the game and got 2 day shipping. I should have my loot on Friday the 12th. (There is also a hardcover limited edition but Amazon didn't even have a price on it much less a ship date.)

I wasn't aware the game had AI party members though it makes sense. I would be leery about this but Persona 3 has sold me on it being possible to do such a thing very well.

I think the limited edition is $35.

I haven't played Persona 3 yet. I'll be getting the PSP version this summer. I've watched Greg play Persona 4 some, which I think has an AI option but also lets you manually control all the party members. I think they've actually gone back and added that option into the PSP Persona 3.

I just remember AI party control from Dragon Warrior 4, where the "Do Anything" option did just that, and your characters did wacky things like pull tarot cards and trip over their own weapons.

Star Ocean 2 traumatized me. I think the AI settings were: Flail Uselessly, Use all MP within 20 seconds, and Run To Your Death.

I can see how that would be permanently scarring. ^^;

I haven't played Final Fantasy since ... X, I think. I didn't like it much, so I sort of gave up on the series, since the last one I played before that was VIII, and I didn't like that one either. Are any of the ones I've missed since better, in your opinion? I really liked FFI - VII and Tactics. :)

Lessee... I really liked 10, but if you didn't then I wouldn't recommend that or 10-2. 11 is an MMO and is an entirely different sort of game from the rest of the series. I love it and have spend far too much of my life on it, but it's nearing the end of its lifespan and now isn't really a good time to start it. If you feel like you absolutely must try an FF-based MMO, wait for 14, which is supposed to start later this year (and is the reason for the approaching decline of FF11, not that I am bitter or anything ( ... )

Thanks for your thoughts! I was all right with the gameplay in 10, but I think what actually bothered me were the characters (I generally found them to be annoying and one-dimensional, though some were more tolerable than others). Same with 8 (I really, really wanted to stab Rinoa every time she appeared). I've been meaning to give 9 a try, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet. Maybe if I wait long enough, the downloadable version will be out. ;) Maybe 13 will be good! I'll wait for your verdict on that one.

I was no fan of Rinoa, either. I know a fair amount of people don't like the FF10 characters, but I did; however, based on that I'd say you should stay away from FF12, as Vaan managed to cross my annoyance line and then some.

You'll be hearing a lot about 13 in future posts, I'm sure. ^_~
