Fanfic came up in Radio Four's Front Row tonight (about twenty minutes into the programme), in connection with Diana Souhami's novel Gwendolen which reimagines George Eliot's Daniel Deronda from the heroine's point of view. Has Diana Souhami not noticed that Daniel Deronda is already from Gwendolen's point of view?

I will give her the benefit of the doubt, then! (It's a fantastic novel. I am writing a paper on it this week, so feeling a bit proprietorial, especially as people do tend to be WRONG about Gwendolen.)

I really dislike Gwendolen: a self-centred woman who doesn't actually get what she deserves, because no woman deserves Grandcourt, but certainly can do with a kick up the backside. What I found interesting is the contrast between her delusions about singing and the real world of professional performers.
