I don't know where Japanese Christians find (or found, back before global monoculture) a niche in their own historical context to understand who Jesus was, humanly speaking. Were there itinerant religious teachers and a commonly accepted old religion? Was there a fallen, forgotten national royal bloodline, and an expectation of a religious/political savior to come?

I have heard that they have a hard time with the concepts of "guilt" and "repentance," which must be even more of a problem.

I dunno, "guilt" is pretty close to "shame", which is pretty deeply ingrained in most Asian cultures.

That's funny, I feel the opposite: I have no major beef with weird translations of the Bible, as long as the people reading it eventually move to something more standard (you can't go through life reading the Brick Testament), but I just hate the look, sound, and style of manga, so this just gets a great big "eeeew" from my corner.

I cringe when I hear someone say that a translation of the Word is "much-abridged." Don't they know that it's just fine the way it is? This kind of thing really aggravates those of us who hold to a verbal-plenary view of scripture.

I think I saw this at Barnes & Noble a few weeks ago. I happened to open it to the pages dealing with Christ's temptation in the desert. 3secondfish and I agreed that Satan looked like a Dementor.
