Connie Willis is completely made of AWESOME!

There's this really long story on my livejournal regarding Bellwether. I'd gotten a copy (somehow) which was misprinted and didn't have the end (ack!) so I had to order a new one from Borders. My sister zisgemx picked my order up and then, as a prank, sent it on a world tour.

I remember seeing some reference to this on Colin's journal when he got the book. I ran into a used copy much later and went "Hey, I know that cover! And hey, it's by Connie Willis!" and I was reading Doomsday Book (my first Willis) at the time, and...yeah. So that's my next Willis book.

Ah yes, Colin did go a bit nuts with Bella.

Doomsday Book was my second Connie Willis (can you say DEPRESSING?!) and my first was To Say Nothing of the Dog. Has anybody warned you about Passage yet?

Have you read Lincoln's Dreams? If you're currently into the Civil War, then now's the time.

See, I loved Doomsday Book, but was glad I'd read it before TSNOTD, so I could read the fluffy Victoriana humor to cheer up after the Black Death. heh.

Haven't read or heard aught of Passage.

Read Lincoln's Dreams not too long ago. Told with amazing skill, but that's the one I found depressing.

So now you have to back to redial_the_gate and reread the movie discussions!

I have to say that when I finally saw the movie, my initial reaction was, "Wow, James Spader plays Daniel just like MS!" Then I mentally whapped myself and said, "Er, right. Yeah. Other way round." :)

And the music! Unbelievably beautiful.

Hee! Yeah, it was kind of fun watching Spader and going "Wow, Shanks can really channel this guy!" And word to the music. The show's music is all fairly heavy-handed renditions of themes from the movie, at least for the first few seasons, so it was nice to hear the themes in their original composition. David Arnold is a great film score composer, if I remember correctly this movie kind of "made" him: got him attention from the right people, and that sort of thing.

I saw Michael Shanks at a con several years ago. He made specific mention that when he landed the role of Daniel Jackson, he made a conscious effort to play it the way James Spader did at first, with the intention of developing the character into his own. But he wanted to start out with what was already there.

RDA, otoh, in one of the docs on the DVDs, made a comment that he'd take the role of Jack, but there was no way he was playing it the way Kurt Russell did. That just wasn't happening.

I find both approaches highly entertaining. And while I don't mind KR for the movie, RDA is totally the Jack I love.

In other news, my dad is doing better.
