Book review dump of doom

Oct 18, 2007 13:51

Okay, I haven't caught up with book reviews since...before Lent? That can't be right. Well anyway, a long time. So I'm going to just do these at the speed of light and just get it out of the way. I'm not posting reviews of everything I've read since Lent because first of all I do, contrary to popular belief, have a life and secondly I can't even ( Read more... )

books, book reviews

(is there, by the way, a significant overlap between this fandom and the House fandom? because I get definite shades of House from King's Sherlock and it seems like they'd both appeal to a lot of the same folks).

LOL. I believe the resemblance of House to Sherlock (the original, not just King's version) is absolutely intentional. Have you run into any lists of correspondences yet? (Watson/Wilson, the drugs, the musical talent, the detecting caring more for the puzzle than for the people involved, House's apt. #221B? Oh, and "Holmes" actually means "house." Hee.)

Well, I knew that House was based on Holmes, but Holmes's personality is more subdued in Doyle's stuff, generally speaking. King's Holmes is more overtly sarcastic, and his voice just reminded me a lot of House.

Perhaps House and King's version of Holmes are both more modern versions of the great detective?

(also, poor Watson. I excuse the book by saying it's from Mary's pov and she's really terribly elitest when it comes to her own generous gift of intelligence. Holmes is older and more temperate about such things.)

Yeah, I tried hand-waving the whole Watson thing as just Russel's POV, and it worked well up until the point I mentioned in the review where Watson is all proud of himself for making himself a disguise to avoid being followed and then carrying his doctor's bag in plain view. And Russel and Holmes are both kind of like "Oh, poor Watson, so cute when he tries to be smart like us." So that kind of annoyed me. But not enough, thankfully, to ruin the book for me.

Oh, and I keep meaning to tell you:

Curly (younger sister-in-law) has been reading the Wren books (slowly, since school doesn't leave her a lot of time for pleasure-reading). She's about halfway through the second one and really enjoying it. She asked me to tell you that she really likes the books.

Yes, to everything you said about the Evanovich book. I read books 2 & 3 too, and Plum remains Too Stupid To Live. After book 3, there should be *some* character development, right?

This is what I'm saying. And I have a huge thing about people carrying handguns when they're not sure they can/will use them when the situation warrants. She hits the giant psychopath rapist with her purse instead of shooting him. What is that?? No amount of funny can make up for how frustrated I was with her throughout the whole book.

I've read up through the 10th Plum book, and it doesn't get any better. I gave up on the series when all the books started to run together in my head--if I can't tell the plots apart, then they're getting too formulaic! Plus, I really hate how Stephanie and Morelli never seem to grow up in their relationship at all--they're permanently stuck on immature, since the characters don't really age ( ... )

Yeah, I have a hard time reading books when the main character needs to be smacked all of the time. I liked some of the secondary characters (the big guy that helped her buy her gun and bailed her out a couple times, frex) but not enough to make up for the fact that I really wanted to shake Stephanie most of the time. Gah.

I need to read more Laurie King. I have the second Russel book, I just haven't gotten to it, yet.

Pratchett for the win! For some reason J can't get into those books. I'm thinking of having his head examined. Life is not as bright without Pratchett.
